“According to the kindness that I have done unto thee, thou shalt do unto me.” Genesis 21:23
“Daddy, why is that man standing outside in this cold?”, my daughter Ella Grace asks from the back seat.
I had already spotted him, standing on the corner. He had a sign that said, “Anything helps. God Bless.”
I swallowed hard and prayed: “God, how do I answer?”
“We can’t really know why some people have so little, while we have so much, Ella Grace,” I say, “but what we can know this. God expects us to reach out with kindness and share what we have.”
I could tell Ella Grace wanted a better explanation, but I didn’t know what else to say.
That night I ended our dinner blessing with, “God give us opportunities to help others.”
Ella Grace added, “Momma, will you take me to the store tomorrow? God showed me an opportunity today.”
The next evening, I found Ella Grace and her older sister Mary Katherine organizing piles of socks, scarves, gloves, and assorted snacks. “What in the world?” I ask.
My wife, Corinne smiles “ It is Ella Grace’s idea. We’re making “love bags” to hand out to those we see on the street, who seem to need them.”
Soon our car trunk was full, deliveries were made, and there were extras to share with those who wanted to join Ella Grace’s project.
I can’t help but believe that every bag contained a breath of kindness, and that God was well pleased with each offering.
Prayer: God, Open our eyes to the opportunities you offer, to spread kindness, and show Your love.
